OUR ANALYSIS OF COMMON RECRUITMENT PROBLEMS

CLIENT QUESTION:
Is there a real shortage of qualified and experienced FMCG management and director talent in the UK?   This is what the agencies often tell us.  Is this true?

OCTANE ANSWER:
No. The majority of companies use contingency database agencies and advertised selection database agencies.  The only candidates that contact contingency and advertised database agencies are those that are actively seeking a new job.

Because, at any one time, these candidates amount to approximately 10% of the total pool of qualified candidates, it appears to the agencies' clients that there is a shortage of quality candidates.

Because all the agencies say there is a shortage, clients think that it must be true.  The fact of the matter is that usually the only place where there is a shortage is on the individual agencies' databases.

Octane is not a contingency database agency nor is it an advertised selection database agency.  Octane is an Executive Search Consultancy (known as 'Search') and as such does not encounter any such apparent shortages.

CLIENT QUESTION:
To gain access to more candidates, should we use three or four advertised selection/contingency database agencies?

OCTANE ANSWER:
No. The agencies all share the same small pool of candidates that are seeking new employment and it is likely that you will get the same candidates from the different agencies.  Also, because each agency knows that they are not the sole agent, they will make little or no effort to solve the client's problem.

By using Search, Octane can target and reach not just the 10% of candidates actively seeking new employment, but virtually 100% of qualified candidates.

CLIENT QUESTION:
But Search is usually used for the most senior business appointments. Is it too expensive for other levels?

OCTANE ANSWER:
Because Octane only delivers suitably qualified candidates, clients do not waste time and money considering and/or interviewing unsuitable candidates. Further, Octane's expertise in carefully matching candidates with clients means that future employee turnover is dramatically reduced.  Combined, these factors mean that Search is realistically affordable for recruiting senior and middle managers as well as directors.

CLIENT QUESTION:
Is Search for large organisations only?

OCTANE ANSWER:
No.  It is true that most of Octane's business (circa 75%) over the last 10 years has come from the largest (top 50) FMCG organisations, but Octane also does business with many smaller entrepreneurial up-and-coming organisations that will, without doubt, be the FMCG power players of the future.

By using Search, these smaller, less well-known, but fast-growing, companies can have their opportunities introduced to outstanding individuals by a confidential direct personal approach from a skilled headhunter.  Search delivers an impact and effectiveness, which is not possible through inferior recruitment methods.

CLIENT QUESTION:
Other recruitment methods have failed so far - why should we try Search?

OCTANE ANSWER:
The much larger pool of qualified candidates made available through specialist Search enables even the rarest types of candidates to be identified and approached.

Organisations who experience particular problems because of where they are located can achieve solutions they previously found impossible.

Typically, other recruitment methods deliver quite low rates of successful placements:

  • Database Contingency Agencies 5% - 20%
  • Advertised Selection Database Agencies 20% - 35%

Specialised Search is the ideal recruitment method for companies who want a known outcome.

Octane successfully completes 95% of all of the assignments it undertakes because it combines pure Search with its very tightly focused FMCG commercial roles specialisation.
